Every time I feel like shit, it’s only a matter of time before that shitty experience changes.

Two nights ago I went to bed in tears. Life was life-ing.

Last night I went to bed with fiery purpose and a remembrance of my relentlessness in my body.

What changed?

We have all heard that ‘time heals.’

Well I have something more clear to offer you which brings me much comfort and understanding in times like these.

In yoga, there is no such thing as time. There is only the changing predominance of three qualities called the guṇas: tamas, rajas and sattva.

You can think of these like the three primary colours: blue, red and yellow.

Just as every colour is made up of different amounts of the primary colours, so every thing is made up of different amounts of the guṇas.

When you experience a larger amount of tamas, you will feel lethargic and disinterested.

When you experience a larger amount of rajas, you will feel creative, restless and passionate.

When you experience a larger amount of sattva, you will feel tranquility, happiness and peace.

So when I’m lethargic, I am so for no other foundational reason then my experience contains relatively more tamas than the other two qualities.

I find it so liberating to LET GO of the STORIES about why I’m down, and embrace a more foundational energetic understanding of the experience.

When this happens, all I get to do is wait for the inevitable shift of these qualities (change is the only constant).

Or, I can take the driver’s seat and practice some of the tools in my yogic tool belt that are specifically designed to sattivicize my experience.

That’s literally what the practice of yoga is all about. Sattvicizing.
