Compassionate Communication: December 11 2021, 6 – 7:30pm PT (UTC -8)
Sidereal Scorpio Lunation
How you think matters.
What you say to yourself and others matters.
How you say it matters.
How you listen matters.
Communication is an art form. This session is an opportunity to practice your unique artistic expression with tangible exercises that help you to focus on and discern what you might be feeling, why you might be feeling it, and what you might want to do about it in particular situations.
- This session will not necessarily cover all of the basics of Nonviolent Communication; we simply do not have enough time in 1.5 hours!
- This is a live session only; there will be no replay available so please ensure that you are able to attend during the time that it is offered.
- A video-capable device is recommended but not required. Attendees may keep their videos off for privacy or comfort, and are free to leave at any time.
- This session may or may not be recorded. If it is, only the image of active speakers will be captured; the recording will not be distributed to participants.
- This session will be in English. Zoom’s auto-captioning feature will be enabled.
- It may be helpful to have something to write on and something to write with during this session.
- This is a trauma-informed, invitational space. You may take part in/skip any exercises as you wish.
- Please email Tara at Connect@From-TheHearth.ca for other accessibility needs and/or questions.
How is this an expression of Patañjali’s Yoga?
In the first pāda (book) of the Yoga Sūtra, Patañjali describes seven antidotes to distractions that prevent us from even beginning our engagement in yoga practice. The following antidote is the inspiration for this session:
Yoga Sūtra I.35
Sanskrit Language with Devanāgarī Alphabet:
विषयवती वा प्रवृत्तिरुत्पन्ना मनसः स्थितिनिबन्धिनी
International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST):
viṣayavatī vā pravṛttir-utpannā manasaḥ sthiti nibandhanī
An English Translation:
Or [note: this comes in the middle of the list of antidotes] by binding the mind into stillness to observe the contents of the mind as they arise.
This antidote (YS I.35) guides you to practice resting your focus in one place. This allows you to strengthen your muscle of noticing, overpowering and checking harmful tendencies as they arise (see also YS III.9-.10), ultimately leading to a reduction in mental strife.
This Compassionate Communication session is an expression of this antidote in practice.
This sūtra translation and commentary is by Dr. Shyam Ranganathan.

PARTICIPATE IN THE GIFT ECONOMY
This session is being offered within a gift economy model to support more financial equity and help move our society toward a needs-based distribution of resources.
A few things:
- We have been trained to mistrust anything offered freely; please know, there is no catch.
- My livelihood depends on this gift economy.
- If you are feeling guilt or obligation around giving, then you might be engaging in the exchange economy instead of the gift economy.
- We have been trained to think in terms of scarcity; this is an opportunity to practice unlearning that.
Miki Kashtan says, “gift economies are truly gift economies only if the gifting is voluntary.” So while I offer you an opportunity to contribute financially here, I ask that you only do so if it is joyful for you, and if you are able to do so without hardship, resentment or expectation.
As an estimate, it will take approximately $15 CAD per person to make this offering viable. You are invited to contribute an amount that feels generous and financially sustainable for you. If you are not able to contribute any amount, please choose zero. If you are able to contribute more, please consider covering the cost for one or more participants who cannot contribute.
If you have concerns or questions about making a financial contribution, please contact me. I value these conversations as an opportunity to learn, connect, and find creative ways to attend to everyone’s needs.
The gift economy is an invitation to practice questioning the exchange economy. I understand that this is asking you to examine the entire set of beliefs that sustain the existing world economy.. which is a lot to ask.
Thank you for any willingness that you have to meet me in approximating truly free giving and receiving.
You can read more about the gift economy here.

Welcome! I am grateful for the opportunity to share this digital space with you. My name is Tara (they/them) and I am a Yoga philosophy teacher.
My vision is an uprising of the one person revolution, where every human being has the freedom to choose to take effective self-responsibility. As such, my offerings center on empowering clients to take charge of, and be responsible for, their own life.
I have completed 500 certified hours in Yoga studies, and am currently in the midst of completing 175 continuing education hours. I am also in the process of becoming a Certified trainer in Nonviolent Communication. You can find out more about my experience here.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC, aka Compassionate Communication) is – in my experience – an incredible tool for self study and tracing habitual responses to their root, consistently putting me in the driver’s seat of my life in a gentle and effective way.
NVC also helps me to connect with other humans across lines of difference, and assists me in nervous system regulation when that connection across difference is challenging.
It is a very effective modality and I am excited to share it with you in this session!
To be totally honest with you, I’ve had a lot of online workshops through my work and I don’t feel the same sense of connectedness that you manage to create.. that sense of community.
It’s because of the people, the smaller group, and the fact that you’ve successfully created something where we’re tuned in. It’s interactive.
So yours are the only online workshops that I really enjoy!
It can’t be easy to do when you’re not there in person, to still connect everyone and make sure that everyone’s included and no one feels left out
But you’ve really successfully created that environment where everyone is welcome, and where I can share and where I still feel part of the community, even though it’s online.”
“The content that Tara gives- I’ve never seen it before.
Tara holds online sacred space and healing work. I feel so caught in between speechless and bursting with ALL the words of love, delicious contemplation, inspiration, excitement and deep humility when I think of expressing what gifts Tara has shared with me and others.”
